The short answer

Check your event's own gear list first: New Zealand races differ from each other more than people expect. Then work backwards: what is mandated, what the weather might add, and what you personally know you need.

Who this is for: Anyone in the last week before a New Zealand trail race, from a first 21km to a hundred miler.

Race-Week Checklist: New Zealand Trail Events

Race week isn't training week: the work is done. What's left is logistics, and NZ trail events add their own flavour: mandatory kit lists, mountain weather that rewrites itself daily, and start lines a long drive from anywhere. Here's the week, in order.

Seven days out

  • Read the event's mandatory gear list again: this year's version, not last year's. Seam-sealed jacket, thermals, beanie, gloves, first aid and an emergency blanket are common; cold-forecast additions can appear late.
  • Audit your kit against it. Anything missing, sort it now, not at registration.
  • Nothing new on race day. New shoes, new vest, new gels: this week is too late to introduce any of them.

Four or five days out

  • Do one short run in full race kit: vest packed to mandatory weight, race socks, race shoes. Bounce, rub and chafe points show up in twenty minutes; fixes are easy with days in hand.
  • Write your fuel plan in grams per hour and count the units into a bag (our fuelling guide does the maths). Add spares: pockets lose things.
  • Check the long-range forecast, then check it again daily. NZ mountain weather changes fast; pack for the mountain's opinion, not the town's.

Two days out

  • Charge everything: watch, headlamp if the event requires one, phone, spare battery.
  • Prep drop bags if the event uses them: label clearly, pack as if you'll be cold and grumpy when you open them, because you will be.
  • Trim toenails. Tonight, not race morning. Your future self says thanks.

The night before

  • Lay out the full kit, bib to socks. Anti-chafe balm on the known trouble spots goes on the pile so morning-you can't forget it.
  • Bottles filled, fuel distributed into the pockets it will actually live in.
  • Confirm start-line logistics: drive time, parking, shuttle cut-offs. NZ start lines are rarely five minutes away.

Race morning

  • Kit on, vest on, thirty-second shakedown jog: anything bouncing gets one strap pull now.
  • Weather call on the start line, not the motel: jacket on or stashed where the mandatory list says it lives.
  • Start slower than feels right. That's the whole tactic.

Missing anything on the list? The showroom stocks race-week staples, and if you bring your event's gear list in, we'll check your kit against it over the counter.

Tarawera Ultra-Trail by UTMB: mandatory gear

This is what the organiser published, not our opinion. Lists change between editions and some items are weather-dependent on the day. Always confirm the current list with the event before you race.

Notes from the organiser: the event is cupless, so carrying your own cup, bottle or vest is strongly advised. TMiler runners carry the full list at all times. TMiler and T102 runners must pass a gear check before collecting their race pack.

What we would carry it in

FYP view, not organiser requirement: a vest with enough capacity to carry the full weather-dependent list without repacking mid-race. For T50 and above that usually means 8–12L rather than a minimal race vest. Two soft flasks plus the ability to take a cup at aid stations. Trail socks you have already run long in, and anti-chafe applied before the start rather than carried.

Checklist

  • Event-mandated Seam-sealed waterproof jacketRequired by Tarawera, Kepler and Northburn. A shower-resistant running jacket will not pass a gear check.
  • Event-mandated Thermal long-sleeve topPolypropylene or wool. Kepler requires two; check your event.
  • Event-mandated Emergency survival bagA bag, not a blanket. Tarawera and Northburn both specify this.
  • Weather-dependent Beanie and glovesTarawera confirms its weather-dependent items a few days out. Pack as if you will need them.
  • Weather-dependent Thermal leggings or overtrousersCompression tights are explicitly not accepted at Northburn or Kepler.
  • Likely essential Head torch plus a backupSpare batteries, a second torch or a USB pack. Required for most night sections.
  • Likely essential Your own cupTarawera is a cupless event.
  • Likely essential Fluid capacity for the longest gap between aid stationsNorthburn requires the ability to carry two litres at all times.
  • Likely essential Socks you have already run long inRace week is not the week to try a new sock.
  • Likely essential Anti-chafe, applied before the startApplied, not carried.
  • Optional PolesSome events restrict when they can be deployed. Check before you plan around them.
  • Optional Recovery footwear in the drop bagFor afterwards, not during.

Anything marked event-mandated comes from a named event's published list. Everything else is our judgement, not a rule.
